Moulton SST

Dr Alex Moulton's 'spaceframe' small-wheeler is still handmade using Reynolds Steel, in Bradford -Upon-Avon. Who knew?

Moulton SST with Alfine Hub for N.W.

This beautiful Moulton was commissioned by our client N.W. after she saw our Moulton Flyte at Cyclefit Store Street. Moulton quickly handmade an SST in the same blue/grey hues.
She wanted a stylish commuter that hit all her criteria:

  • Comfortable (i.e. suspension)
  • Compact (SST has 20" wheels)
  • Fast and light
  • Can separate for portability
  • Low maintenance (11-sp Alfine hub)

Steeped in British Engineering Tradition

Dr Alex Moulton was an award-winning engineer, and one of the few people to question the bicycle design orthodoxy that has lasted over 130 years.

A short test-ride is generally enough to convert riders of all abilities to Dr Alex's philosophy. The small wheels spin-up faster and allow you to ride closer in a group. The front and rear suspension is functional and comfort. You quickly adjust your riding style to hit everything and avoid almost nothing.

The Moulton Shock

The Moulton has a long history of shocking the bike industry with their speed and potential. And that is as true today as it was 60 years ago. They are often bought for their style and design and the speed comes as a pleasant shock.

Moulton spaceframe separates into 2 halves

"Like other engineered objects that I find exciting, its appearance and performance are indivisible – it has a kind of sparse beauty. It is also recognised the world over as the ultimate riding machine"

"What a lovely problem to have though - a bike with real personality and ability to make folk smile."

Live In Peace With Your Bike

For us the apotheosis of a Moulton is its practicality as a long-distance commuter/tourer. Our experience is that you can go, and then proceed to get in anywhere on a Moulton! Everyone assumes it folds anyway (it doesn't, it separates).
It would be fruitless to expect our speed-seeking clients to give up their Madone's and Enve Melee's exclusively for a Moulton. But for anyone who wants an uber-stylish and rare commuter/tourer, that can occasionally separate into two small canvas bags, the Moulton is a revelation. The only potential drawback to riding a Moulton is that whilst the ride is fast, the constant questions and compliments can still add considerable time to your overall journey. What a lovely problem to have though - a bike with real personality and ability to make folk smile.

What our clients say

  • "I'm new to cycling so needed some support on finding a bike that would be right for me. Julian couldn't have been kinder or more supportive, he took time to find out what I wanted from my cycling and then looked closely at my physical structure to ensure that the bike is a comfortable fit for me. It really is a 5 star service and far exceeded my expectations."

    RM

    New Cyclist

  • "A highly personalized and very friendly service, giving good advice and adjustments that are helpful whatever level of cyclist you are."

    MJ

    Cyclist

  • "A great service, full of personal touches as well as the "harder" scientific analysis of my position on the bike, which was also excellent. I feel more planted on the bike now, and came away with some really useful feedback from the session."

    Ed H

    London Dynamo Rider

  • "Very very personalised service. You arrive, they expect you, greet you by first name, have checked your file from past visits and set out very clearly what the process will be, what issues they're looking to address and how and they are happy to take the time to walk you through everything in layman's terms. Almost any professional service entity could learn a lot from how Cyclefit works. "

    Peter G.

    Recreational rider

  • "I have a lot of trust in you guys and I know how you work so I think we could do something good. Orthotics feeling good."

    Tom Pidcock

World and Olympic champion, Ineos Grenadiers.
